Sustainability of Indigenous Alcohol Drinking Culture amongst the Tribes of West Bengal, India: A Sociological Exploration of Native Knowledge versus Urban Stigma

This paper aims to explore the sustainability quotient in indigenous alcohol production and consumption within a rural community, while also examining urban perspectives on this practice. It contextualizes indigenous alcohol production and consumption as an essential part of tribal cultural and ecological heritage. The gendered subtexts often challenge the mainstream upper-caste practices prevalent in urban Indian cities. This blend of counterculture and heritage within the daily tribal experience frequently questions and challenges narratives about development, modernization, and moral norms. Contemporary discussions on commercial marketization, urban stigma, and government policies often overlook the challenges of preserving this tribal heritage. Methodologically, the paper employs a critical review of secondary sources to thoroughly explore the topic. It argues that indigenous brewing fosters social cohesion and is more environmentally sustainable than commercially produced alcohol; therefore, this heritage drink warrants proper guidance, preservation, and targeted promotion.
